Having been let down by another company, who failed to carry out their due diligence and clearly just wanted to pass the issue on to somebody else, I was left with no hot water or heating and no clear solution. I called Ben, and he was able to come out the same day. He carried out all the correct tests, quickly found the gas leak, retested the drop rates, confirmed everything was safe, and got my gas switched back on. Ben was an absolute legend in my hour of need — professional, thorough, and genuinely caring. I will always use him from now on. I would highly recommend his service!

I contacted Ben on a Saturday morning as I had no heating or hot water. Ben quickly attended and soon established that the gas supply had been ‘capped’ off. Supply was restored and I had hot water and heating. Ben also talked through the thermostat with me. This was all done on a day when Ben had a family party to attend, so thank you Ben. I’d highly recommend Ben to others with similar issues.

Why has my gas been capped?

A capped supply means your gas has been isolated at the meter and sealed so it can’t be turned back on. This is done for safety, and only a Gas Safe registered engineer can put it right. The most common reasons:

If a gas smell was reported, the National Gas Emergency Service will have attended, isolated the supply and capped it. They make the property safe but don’t carry out repairs. We trace the leak, repair it, and only reconnect once your whole installation passes a tightness test.

If your CO alarm went off and you called the National Gas Emergency Service (or the fire service attended), they may have isolated the faulty appliance or capped your whole supply to make the property safe. They don’t carry out repairs. We find the source, whether that’s a faulty appliance, a blocked flue or poor ventilation, fix it, and only reconnect once everything passes a tightness test and is safe to use.

During a safety check, an appliance classed as Immediately Dangerous may have been isolated. If permission to make it safe was refused, the supply may have been capped. We’ll diagnose the fault, quote for the repair, and reconnect once it’s safe.

If your supplier has cut your gas over an unpaid bill, contact them first and get confirmation that reconnection is authorised. Once they’ve given the go-ahead, Ben can restore your supply, purge the pipework and safely relight every appliance, so you’re not left waiting on the supplier’s own engineer. If your meter has been removed entirely, your supplier will need to refit it first.

Gas is often capped when a property sits empty, between tenancies or during renovation. We’ll reconnect and test before new tenants move in, and we can issue a Landlord Gas Safety Record on the same visit.

If your supply was isolated while a kitchen, bathroom or pipework was being changed, we’ll tightness test the new installation, reconnect it and sign off the gas work properly.

Never try to remove a cap or turn the supply back on yourself.

It’s illegal and dangerous. If you can smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

How much does a gas reconnection cost?

Every reconnection includes a full tightness test, so you know the whole installation is safe and not just the appliance you need.

Brighton Gas Safety will never charge an upfront fee. All work is invoiced after the work has been completed.

* If you have more than one gas appliance connected to the same gas meter, UK law requires that all appliances are tested together — not individually. This is because a fault in one appliance can affect the safety of another. For example, your hob might seem to work perfectly fine on its own, but if there’s an issue when the boiler is switched on, it could make either appliance unsafe.

Our gas safety inspections always cover every appliance on your meter, ensuring your property is fully compliant and, most importantly, safe.

How we reconnect your gas

Turning the gas back on is the easy part. The job is making sure it’s safe to stay on. Every reconnection follows the same steps:

1. Find out why it was capped

We start by checking why your supply was isolated, whether that was a reported leak, an unsafe appliance, a supplier disconnection or an empty property. That tells us what needs fixing before anything is turned back on.

2. Tightness test the whole installation

We pressure test all the pipework from the meter to every appliance. If the pressure drops, there’s a leak somewhere, and the gas stays off until it’s found.

3. Repair any faults

Minor issues, such as a loose joint, are usually fixed on the spot. Anything bigger is quoted and agreed with you, or your landlord, before we start.

4. Restore the supply and purge the pipework

Once the installation passes, we remove the cap, restore the supply and purge the air out of the pipework so your appliances light cleanly.

5. Relight and check every appliance

Your boiler, hob, gas fire and any other appliances on the meter are relit and checked for safe operation before we leave. You won’t be left to relight anything yourself.

6. Talk you through it

Before we go, we explain what we found and what we fixed, and flag anything worth keeping an eye on.

Gas Reconnection FAQs

A standard reconnection is £89 with no VAT added. That includes a full tightness test, restoring the supply and relighting your appliances. If a leak needs tracing and repairing first, that starts from £129. Any larger repair is quoted before we carry it out, and there’s never an upfront fee.

We prioritise reconnection callouts and can often attend the same day, including weekends. A straightforward reconnection usually takes 30 minutes to an hour once we’re on site.

The emergency service makes your property safe but doesn’t fix the cause. Call us and we’ll trace the source of the carbon monoxide, repair or isolate the faulty appliance, and reconnect your supply once it’s safe. If your CO alarm is old or was the cause of a false alarm, we can fit a new one on the same visit for £49.

CO Detector Installtion

No. Removing a cap or restoring a gas supply yourself is illegal and dangerous. A capped supply has been isolated for a reason, and it must be tested by a Gas Safe registered engineer before it’s turned back on.

Yes, once your supplier has authorised it. Settle things with your supplier first and get confirmation that reconnection is approved. Ben can then restore your supply, purge the pipework and relight every appliance safely. If your meter has been removed, your supplier will need to refit it first.

The National Gas Emergency Service makes the property safe but doesn’t carry out repairs, so you’ll need a Gas Safe registered engineer to find and fix the problem. We trace the cause, carry out any gas leak repair needed, and only reconnect once the installation passes a tightness test.

We won’t reconnect anything that isn’t safe. Minor leaks are usually repaired on the spot. Anything more involved is quoted first, and nothing is fixed without your, or your landlord’s, sign-off.

A reconnection isn’t the same as your annual Landlord Gas Safety Record. If your record is due, or the property has been empty between tenancies, we can carry out the inspection on the same visit and email the report the same day.
